Magic Bars
This recipe came about from a result of an OOPS. I opened a can of condensed milk instead of evaporated because I was distracted by my cell phone. Imagine that...me talking on the phone!?! My hubby says I can talk the wallpaper off the walls. I like to think of it was being social and interested in others.
Make this recipe your own and add or delete what ever flavors or textures that your family likes. For example, my husband doesn't eat coconut, so I had to eliminate it.
Here's the basic formula for these magic bars. The bottom layer is a graham cracker crust. Followed by semi sweet chocolate and then you keep layering the goodies until you reach the top. I like to make sure there's a crispy layer as a surprise in all the chocolatey goodness.
Let's get baking you'll need Bake: 350 degrees 23-25 minutes
1 1/2 cups ground graham crackers
1/2 cup melted butter
1 14oz can sweetened condensed milk
2 cups semi sweet chocolate chips
1 cup butterscotch chips
1/4 cup feuillentine flakes or granola
1/2 cup shredded coconut (optional)
1 cup chopped nuts
Parchment paper to line a 13x9 pan
Mix melted butter and ground graham crackers. Push the mixture into the bottom of the parchment lined pan. Spread half of the semi sweet chocolate chips on top followed by the condensed milk. Next layer is the feuillentine or granola. Feuillentine is a crispy and flaky cereal type product. Rice Krispie treats would also work here, make sure you break them into small pieces. The goal is to get a layer that has crunch in between the mushy layers. Did you like that? "MUSHY" that's a culinary term that's reserved for food that you don't need your teeth to enjoy.
Continue to layer your favorite ingredients (or listed above) and top with the chopped or sliced nuts. I used almonds because I love almonds but walnuts, pistachios would work too. Finish the bars with the remainder of the semi sweet chocolate chips.
Bake on 350 degrees for 23-25 minutes or until the top is melted. Allow this to cool completely before you cut them into bars. The parchment will allow you to remove the bars from the pan easily.
I bet if you added candied fruits and nuts we could make a fruit cake magic bar! The possibilities are endless. A lemon curd and blueberry with granola would be fun during the season. I would omit the butterscotch chips and use a white chocolate chips instead.
Wrap the bar individually and put in the freezer. They'll will stay fresh for up to 3 months, if they last that long!
