Drying of the Herbs
The first cool weekend in October means it's time to trim the herbs from the garden. I lay the parsley, basil and oregano, single layer on a cookie sheet and put them in a low oven (200 degrees) for about an hour. The herbs will dry out and be ready to use all Winter.
Sometime I get WILD and put them all together with a little garlic power and onion powder. This is my own garden blend of Italian seasonings.
As the commercial states, "I put that sh-- on everything!"
It's best over garlic bread, a dish of pasta with garlic and oil or used for cooking sauces.
The small green tomatoes that are left on my vine, will be cut open and allowed to dry in the sun. I will harvest the seeds for next years tomato plants. Same will be done with all the hot peppers and cucumbers. Once the seeds are dried, they go into small envelopes and filed in a little garden box. They are my "sleeping Spring babies" and will make a beautiful garden next year. The cycle continues and my garden brings me such joy.
My favorite show when I was younger was "Little House on the Prairie". This is as close as I'll ever get to being Mrs. Ingalls and living off the land.
"To everything there is a season...." sad to see my garden fade off into a slumber, but happy because that means the holiday season is beginning!
