Homemade brownie with gram slam gelato

We've lived in the tri-state area all our lives and have dined at all the high-end steakhouses. Or so we thought......

The popular steakhouses could not compare to The River Palm Terrace in Edgewater NJ. The moment we stepped into the place, we felt like we had traveled back in time to a gentlemen's club in the 1920's. The rich wood was complemented by the dark ceilings, and the walls were dotted with celebraties that have dined there. We were seated in a romantic booth and greeted by our server, Jack. We were very impressed with his knowledge of the menu, wonderful suggestions, and flexibility to our special needs.

As we decided on our entrees, a basket of warm bread was placed on the table with a homemade onion loaf that was delicious.

At this point, no one knew that their food was going to be featured on this blog. I like to wait until after the meal to discuss this with the manager. I always ask if it's ok that I write the blog and use photos that I took. David Gonzalez, the manager, was a delight and seemed pleased that they were being featured. He was warm, friendly, and extremely professional.

Let's talk food. We told Jack that it was our anniversary and were open to suggestions. I knew sushi was in my future, and my husband wanted to try a steak. We ordered a lobster cocktail and were curious how it would arrive. Pleasantly surprised, a half lobster arrived, with capers and a delicious cream sauce. The meat was sweet, and I could tell the lobster was expertly cooked. Lobster isn't on our everyday menu, and having it prepared perfectly is a wonderful thing. Most lobsters you get in a restaurant are either overcooked or have a "white film" on the claw meat.

We were informed that their crab cake was "world famous," and we had to try them. The lunch menu was one crab cake, and the dinner portion was two. Of course, we got two, so we both could try them. I tend to be a crab cake snob, and I am very particular about the ratio of crab to the binder. The crab cake was mostly meat with a little sprinkle of bread crumbs to hold the cake together. We asked if there was mustard, which tends to overpower the crab taste, and Jack investigated and told us that no mustard was used.

We had to agree that the crab cake should be world famous; it was one that I will compare all others to.

The sushi menu was extensive, and I was unsure which one to order. With Jack's suggestion, I ordered the "Andy Roll," which was fresh, perfectly rolled, and topped with a spicy sauce. The level of spice was balanced and didn't ruin my palate for the fresh fish.

This had tuna and salmon with avocado. Why yes, I used a piece of the warm bread to get every drop of the delicious sauce.

This is a place that is known for its steaks, but don't skip out on the sushi. I can't wait to go back and try more sushi.

We noticed that by now the lunch crowd had finished, and they were preparing for the dinner seating. We didn't feel rushed or had the staff circling our table waiting for us to leave. They were wonderful and told us to take our time, relax, and enjoy.

My husband did get his steak, mashed potatoes, and grilled asparagus. The steak was a perfect medium that was enhanced by their signature steak sauce.

Crispy onion rings topped his steak, and they were very good. Not greasy or cut too thick. They were the perfect crunch to a tasty steak.

We finished our meal with drinks and a dessert. An espresso martini and a perfect cappuccino arrived at our table, and we were thrilled.

Jack told us the story of their homemade brownies and that this delightful older woman won a brownie bakeoff that they held. The brownie was served warm with a "gram slam" gelato. The gelato was different and had bits of graham crackers and chocolate, and had a sweet caramel taste. This was a dessert that you wanted to eat on your sofa, in your PJ's under a warm blanket. A guilty sweet treat that topped off a perfect meal.

If you're looking for a place to celebrate a special occasion, this is the place for you. It was priced moderately, and they had valet parking. This gem is nestled on a side road under the George Washington Bridge. You're a sneeze from New York City without the high prices of the city.

Make your reservation well in advance and let Mr. Gonzalez know that you read all about them from this blog.
