There are some items that should not be refrigerated. I'm guilty of putting some of these in the refrigerator just as a matter of convivence. No one likes a messy kitchen.
Here's the list of items that should NEVER go in the refrigerator:
Tomatoes - they lose their flavor and get soft.
Potatoes- the cold turns their starch into sugar.
Garlic- it sprouts roots faster.
Onions - gets mushy from the cold.
Bread - dries out faster.
Bananas - turns black, but it does make them sweeter and softer for baking.
Avocados - ripens better at room temp.
Cucumbers - they get watery and mushy.
Melons - (whole, not cut) sweeter at room temp.
Honey - Crystallizes in the cold. Did you know honey doesn't go bad?
Sweet Potatoes - see potatoes above.
Mango - sweeter at room temp.
Did you know that salted butter can stay at room temperature for up to 2 weeks? They sell "butter bells" so you can store it on the counter.

I'm old fashion and still think butter should be refrigerated. Where do you store your butter?
